More about Objective 1.0
This objective targets how we move people and things. The bulk of emissions in this sector come from tailpipes. By 2050, the world needs to shift from fossil fuel vehicles to a fleet of zero-emissions cars, trucks, bikes, and buses.
Global EV market penetration for passenger vehicles has surged to nearly 9 percent of total new car sales. The main barriers in the way of EVs becoming a much bigger share of the car market are pricing, availability, and charging infrastructure.
The challenge of cutting 6 gigatons from transportation goes beyond ramping up sales of new EVs. We must also phase out the current fleet of billions of combustion vehicles.
In aviation, airlines need to accelerate adoption of sustainable fuels and chart a path to carbon-neutral fuels. For maritime transport, we must begin to shift to “zero-ready” ships powered by clean fuels.
