How is KR 6.1 Tracking?
Nature needs our help to draw down an additional five gigatons of carbon from the atmosphere each year.
Nature-based solutions include reforestation (replanting trees where they once flourished), afforestation (encouraging new growth), and agroforestry (integrating trees and shrubs into farmland). The oceans’ carbon sinks can be restored by the cultivation of aquatic mangroves, seagrasses, and kelp forests.
When these initiatives are tied to offsets, they’re often undermined by issues around carbon accounting, verification, and “additionality,” a gauge of whether the removal added value beyond what would have been cut anyway.
Meeting this challenge demands innovative ways to track these natural carbon removal solutions.
