1.0 Electrify Transportation

Reduce 8 gigatons of transportation emissions to 2 gigatons by 2050.

How can we move people and things more sustainably? The bulk of emissions in the transportation sector come from tailpipes. By 2050, the world needs to shift from fossil fuel vehicles to a fleet of zero-emissions cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles. To command the lion’s share of the auto market, EVs must overcome barriers in pricing, availability, and charging infrastructure.

Cutting six gigatons from transportation demands more than ramped-up sales of new EVs. We must also speed the phaseout of billions of gas-powered vehicles now on the road.

Airlines and plane manufacturers need to accelerate adoption of sustainable fuels and design new carbon-neutral planes. For maritime transport, it’s time to shift to “zero-ready” ships powered by clean fuels.
