How Is KR 2.6 Tracking?
Most of the world cooks and heats buildings by burning oil, gas, or wood. But as electric appliances improve in price and performance, they’re gaining traction in the marketplace.
Electric induction ranges now match or exceed gas for all four basic cooking functions: high-heat, low-heat, broiling, and baking.
To cut the gas and oil used for heating and cooking by half by 2040, this key result calls for fast-tracked electrification of cooking and heating. New construction must be built exclusively with electric stoves and electric heat pumps, which are twice as efficient as fossil fuel systems in cold weather. By 2030, their global share of the heating equipment market is expected to double.
For existing buildings, we’ll need to incentivize replacement heating and cooling systems.
Leading the way toward our 2040 target are New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. More than 70 other cities or counties in California and more than half a dozen in Massachusetts now mandate electrified cooking and heating for new construction.
